We are heartbroken by the devastating tragedy at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis. We grieve alongside the families who lost their precious children, and we lift in prayer the 17 who were wounded, their loved ones, classmates, teachers, and the entire school community.
As followers of Christ, we hold fast to the hope of His promises even in times of unimaginable loss. We pray that God’s peace, which surpasses all understanding, will surround the Annunciation community and bring comfort the broken hearted.
The Iowa Association of Christian Schools (IACS) also recognizes the deep concern that tragedies like this raise for parents and educators everywhere. While we trust ultimately in God’s protection, our member schools take seriously their responsibility to create safe and secure learning environments for students.
IACS member schools across Iowa regularly update crisis plans, work closely with local law enforcement and emergency responders, and maintain secure entrances with visitor protocols. Teachers and staff are trained in emergency response, and schools use camera systems, conduct student drills, and share mapped facilities with responders. Schools also maintain clear communication avenues with parents and receive ongoing training from law enforcement to ensure best practices are in place, as well as provide individualized mental health support for students who need it.
Even with all these precautions, we know that we live in a sinful, broken world. That is why we pray fervently for God’s mercy, protection, and healing. We call on Christians everywhere to join us in lifting up the community of Annunciation Catholic School, that the light of Christ may shine in the darkness and His presence bring strength, comfort, and hope.
